How Can You Minimise Back-to-School Stress

Back-to-school stress is a common concern for parents and children as the new academic year approaches. Changes in routine, homework expectations, exams, and new social environments can trigger anxiety in children of all ages.

Some children may show excitement about seeing friends again, while others experience school-related anxiety, mood changes, sleep difficulties, or resistance to returning to class. These reactions are usually part of a normal adjustment process during school transitions.

Understanding how to support your child through back-to-school anxiety can make the transition smoother and help reduce unnecessary stress for the whole family.

Dr Leo Deng Jin, a paediatrician at Kids Clinic @ Bukit Batok, shares practical strategies parents can use to manage back-to-school stress and support their child’s emotional wellbeing.

1. Set Expectations Before the School Year Starts

Sudden changes can increase stress levels. Returning to a school routine one to two weeks before school begins can make the transition gentler.

Gradually adjust bedtime and morning routines and let your child know in advance that changes are coming. Explaining why routines are important can help children feel more prepared.

It may also help to create a written or picture-based plan so your child knows what to expect when school resumes.

2. Be Positive and Realistic

School-related stress can come from different sources. Your child may be starting an important exam year, attending a new school, or adjusting to changes in friendships.

While parents cannot remove every challenge, encouraging open conversations can help children feel supported. Ask your child what they are worried about and listen calmly.

If your child is attending a new school, highlighting new activities, subjects, or opportunities can help shift the focus to positive possibilities.

It is also important for parents to manage their own anxiety. Children often sense parental stress. Staying calm and viewing challenges as learning opportunities can model healthy coping skills.

3. Communicate With Your Child’s Teacher

Building communication with your child’s teacher early in the school year can be helpful. When teachers understand your child better, they are better positioned to provide feedback.

Regular communication allows parents to stay informed about academic performance, behaviour, and any concerns that may arise. Teachers interact with your child daily and can provide insights into how your child is adjusting to the new school environment.

4. Arrange a Play Date Before School Starts

For younger children, meeting classmates before the first day of school can reduce anxiety.

If possible, arranging a play date allows children to become familiar with peers in a relaxed setting. Walking into class on the first day and recognising a familiar face can make the experience feel less intimidating, especially if your child is entering a new school.

5. Establish a Consistent Routine Once School Begins

Consistency provides stability. When daily routines are predictable, children are better able to manage unexpected stress at school.

Setting a fixed time for homework and limiting distractions, including electronic devices, can support better focus. Parents may also consider modelling healthy screen habits during homework time.

Supporting Your Child’s Emotional Wellbeing

Most children adjust to school transitions with time, reassurance and consistent routines. Open communication and a supportive home environment often help children regain confidence as the school year progresses.

If parents have concerns about their child’s emotional wellbeing, behaviour, or adjustment to school, a paediatric consultation can help provide reassurance and guidance.

At Kids Clinic @ Bukit Batok, Dr Leo Deng Jin provides developmental and behavioural assessments for children experiencing school-related stress, anxiety, or adjustment difficulties. In addition to managing common childhood illnesses, he also supports children’s emotional wellbeing through developmental, behavioural and nutritional assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for children to feel anxious before school starts?
Yes. Many children experience temporary anxiety before returning to school, especially if routines change or they are entering a new environment.

When should I see a paediatrician for school-related stress?
If your child’s stress affects sleep, appetite, behaviour, or academic performance, a paediatric assessment may help determine the underlying factors.

Can school stress affect physical health?
Ongoing stress can sometimes contribute to headaches, stomach aches, sleep difficulties, or behavioural changes. If symptoms persist, medical advice may be helpful.
